| Central Neopia or return to the world map |
|||
Location : In the heart of Neopia
Population : 354,414,367 (35% Shoyru, 27% Kacheek,
15% Kougra, 11% Lupe, 10% Aisha, 2% Other)
Area : 783,134 sq. km
GDP : 640 Billion Neopoints
Weather : Temperate zone. Fair climate with few extreme
temperature shifts.
Terrain : Grassy plains with few trees.
Government : Democracy
Our first stop is Central Neopia, where it all began. (Because of the huge size of the images, I've reduced and combined the three screens into one to help give you an "aerial" shot.) Here, you can either create or adopt a pet to pamper. Pets form the foundation of almost all the activities on the site. Once you have a pet, it is time to start pampering. You will soon notice that Neopian money is called "neopoints" or "np" for short. Neopoints are used to buy things in the shops and auctions so that you can feed and look after your pet. They allow you to play games, trade, and many other things. Not to worry, though...these are easy to get from our fun games and sometimes you can randomly find them on the site.
You will notice a toolbar at the top of the shops pages. These will help you navigate certain popular areas. Because some of these are account specific, the one shown here is not clickable.

This is the shops toolbar. On the neopets page, each of these picts lead to a different area:
Central Neopia serves as the main commercial center and offers the cheapest items on the site. Since almost all Neopians realize this, these shops sell out fairly fast. We will visit each of the three areas separately. When you have finished window shopping, pet (click) JC and we'll move to our next area: Mystery Island.
Main Shops
This is the main shop area. When you click on the "shop" link on the Neopets toolbar, this is the page you visit.
Located in the heart of Neopia, this is one of the busiest areas. Click on the area you would like to learn more about, or simply scroll down.
The NeoLodge offers a variety of places for your pet to stay when you are planning on being away from Neopia for a while. Your pet can have a vacation of up to 28 days and choose from a variety of activites. Remember that this is the only safe way for your pet to receive the care he or she needs while you are gone. NeoSitters, those offering to "babysit" your pet, are forbidden on Neopets because they are often scammers who will strip your account and sometimes even abandon your pet in the Pound. Besides...doesn't your pet deserve a little pampering while you're gone? Here are a few photos of the room styles you may choose from:

The Presidential Palace |
| Located in the Haunted Woods is the famous Cockroach
Towers, which is proud of it's reputation as the grubbiest fleatrap
in all of Neopia. Spooks and surprises on every floor. This is the
perfect Halloween retreat or great for the adventure seeker. |
The Astro-Villa, a truly out of this world neolodge
located on the Space Station, is sure to meet all expectations for
what a deluxe resort should offer. Though the cost of staying there
is quite steep,I give the Astro-Villa my greatest possible recommendation.
|
Located in the heart of the main shop area is
the NeoLodge chain's most glamorous hotel, the Presidential Palace.
Famous for its sprawling layout and "spare no expense" attitude, P.J.
Grundonn's Presidential Palace is, as they say, simply the best. |
Some of the optional activites you may select for your pet include: Fitness Center, Sauna, Video Games, Grooming, Swimming Pool, and many others. Certain pets, like aishas, are not fond of water but love a good video game.
Location: Neopia Central

Maximum annual interest rate: 12.5%

Neopoints
Run by: A tight-fisted Skeith banker
Among the oldest buildings in Neopia Central, the National Neopian has served as an economic cornerstone in Neopia for many years. Since its construction in Y1, the bank has seen well over a trillion Neopoints deposited and withdrawn!
Though the bank grows busier each year, Neopians are still greeted warmly from time to time by the Skeith manager, who strives to bring a personal touch to the transactions of every customer that he meets. Whether you have a Neopian Student account or Millionaire Mega-Platinum, you'll be sure to receive exemplary service from the manager and his well-trained staff!
The bank should be one of your first stops after getting a pet. Creating a bank account serves three purposes:
1) It gives you a place to keep your np, rather than leaving it where random
events can take them from you.
2) Neopoints in the bank earn interest for you. This is a handy way to teach
children how savings work.
3) It gives you a Safety Deposit Box.
You may be wondering what is so special about a Safety Deposit Box. Each user can only carry 50 items at a time. The rest must be stored either in their Safety Deposit Box or in their shops. Obviously, you'll not want to keep too many items stored in your shop because you won't have room for the items you want to sell. Also, items in your Safety Deposit Box are safe from random events such as ghosts who want to steal items or np.
This is also a good time to discuss "random events". Sometimes things happen on the site without you doing anything. These are called "random events" by Neopians. These usually fall into one of three categories: Good, Bad, Just for Fun.
Good:
| Something has happened! | |
![]() |
The Ghost Lion roars and suddenly all your neopets are healed
back to max hit points! |
Bad:
| Something has happened! | |
![]() |
A ghost steals 100 np from you and places it on the Money
Tree |
Just for fun:
| Something has happened!!! | |

Rainbow Pool/PetPet Puddle
Tucked away in the edge of the shops is a mysterious sparkling pool. If you are fortunate enough to find a paint brush as a random event, or win one in a game, or even buy/trade for one, this is where you go to use it. Not all paint brushes can be used on all pet or petpet species, though. Make sure you check what combinations are available. Paint brushes can only be used once and there is no main shop that sells them. PetPets can also be painted in a little area called the PetPet Puddle...an overflow from the larger Rainbow Pool.
Paint brushes are not the only way to transform your pet, however. You can also use Morphing Potions, Transmogrification Potions, Magical Plushies, or the Lab Ray. If you have a Chia, you can also use Chia Pops.
![]() |
|
![]() |
||
| Paint Brushes These can be used to change the color of your pet. They can only be used at the rainbow pool and only on certain pets. |
Morphing Potions/Magical Plushies These change both the color and species of your pet to match the description. For example, the plushie will change your pet into a pink chomby and the potion will change it into a green meerca. |
Transmogrification Potions These change your pets into the mutant version. This moehog transmogrification potion will transform your pet into a mutant moehog. Mutant pets scare me.
|
||
Chia Pops only change chias. You feed your chia one of the magical fruit ones to turn it into the fruit version. Choose relatively tame variety such as Apple or Tomato or go for the wilder Avocado or Chokato Chia.

One other way to change your pet is by using the Lab Ray. To get to the Secret Laboratory, you must find all nine pieces of the Secret Laboratory map. Once you have turned them in, you may use the lab ray on one pet once each day. There is no way to control what it will do though. One day it may raise your pet's strenth, the next change its color. This is the only way to get the rare "Robotic" pet, however, so if you want one of those, you'll have to risk it.
Art Center
Location : 2 km beneath The Main Shops
Population : 3 lonely writers
Area : 600 sq. km
Weather : Damp and Cold
Terrain : Smooth Sandstone
Hailed today as Neopia's Art Centre, The Deep Catacombs is the place to be if you are an aspiring writer, a budding artist, or you just want to have a tasty cup of Cocoa Juppie Mocha at the Coffee Shop. But, where did these Catacombs come from? How long have they been here? Who discovered them? The Deep Catacombs literally appeared out of nowhere... or did they? Thanks to the recent discovery of Professor C. Chesterpot's lost journal, some light may now be shed on these popular, but yet mysterious, Catacombs. Unfortunately, many pages are missing....but we do know that he wandered in here sometime in the middle of the Month of Hunting in Neopia Year 1 and foresaw a day when a great center for art and culture would exist here. Today, that vision takes form before us.
Complete with it's own Coffee Shop, this is one of the great secrets hidden deep beneath the main town. Neopia's Arts and Literature Centre is a great place for you to see stories and poems submitted by other users, read the latest Neopian Times (the Neopets weekly Newspaper) and learn how to draw your favorite pet.

This shoyru will happily supply you all sorts of warm drinks while you browse through the art center. Choose a nice Mint Tea, Tigersquash Cappucino or go for something more unusual...maybe even Fundus Fruit Tea if you are truly brave.

Guild HQ
Guilds are the "clubs" of Neopia. Usually they are a place for people with common interests to get together and have fun. Some offer bribes for members to join, stay, and recruit other members. I've always thought it strange that users would go to so much trouble for an area where there are no awards or rewards from Neopets based on the size of your guild. I prefer the nice, quiet, small guild I am in to the larger, impersonal ones. Like clubhouses, any curious user may view the main page of any public guild to learn a little bit about it. If it seems interesting, there is a link to join that guild. You can only be a member in one guild at a time.
As with clubs outside of Neopia, there are private guilds. These can only be viewed by members of that guild and can only be joined by receiving an invitation.
Money Tree
Helping the needy, fending off the greedy has become the slogan of the Money Tree. It's the only place where Neopians donate gifts and Neopoints so that others who are far more deprived can get a little help. If you wish to make a donation or see if there is anything going for free, then be sure to visit! But don't be too greedy, as the Money Tree will remember your face and give you less of a chance of picking something up the next time.
If you have a fast connection, this is a handy way to get a few items to help you get started. Click on the donations as quickly as you can to see if you get to take the item. There are special giveaway times for great items...times when special things like faeries and chocolate chias are donated to the tree by neopets.
Once you have established yourself, I suggest donating items to help others. After all, everyone deserves a helping hand once and a while. This is a great way to learn about charity. Donations to the tree are also sometimes given to the Soup Faerie.
If charity alone doesn't motivate you, you may be interested in learning that donating often sparks random events. If you haven't had a Faerie Quest in a while, why not drop off an omelette or a toy at the Money Tree and see if one will come looking for you...

Price Changes
This little bulletin board may not look like much to the casual observer, but it is incredibly important to shop keepers. This is where the average price changes for the main shops are located.
Yes, the Neopian Shops always check their prices against the SWA (Shop Wizard Average) just to see if they are charging too much, or too little. If they find the prices of the items in their stores are too high, they will reduce them accordingly. On the other hand, if other shops are trying to inflate the price to drive up their own profits, the Neopian Shops will raise their own prices. This page shows you a list of the recent price changes. It's always a good idea to keep an eye on this.

Post Office
Welcome to the post office. No...you don't need to come here to drop off or pick up your neomail. This is a special shop for stamp collectors. Despite it's cardboard box styled exterior, you'll notice that this climate controlled shop is tidy and well kept. The brightly lit glass display cases are dust and smudge free, even if the shop keeper himself seems a bit rumpled.
Stamps may be displayed in your shop or your stamp album for everyone to see. One note, though...once you put a stamp in your album, you cannot take it out. If you think you may want to sell it, put it in your shop.

Just a quick reminder that while the items above may be sold on online auctions like e-bay, the strictly virtual aspects like neopoints and accounts may not. This statement was released in the Editorial for week 57 of the Neopian Times: Note from the editor Before I start I just want to remind everyone that selling accounts, Neopets or Neopoints on any Auction site is not allowed. If you have bought a plushie, notebook, stickers ect from a shop that is fine, but you can't auction virtual things as that is against our Terms and Conditions.

Disney Theatre
Welcome to the Disney Theatre, home of the latest Disney-themed games and DVD/video releases. Because Disney is such a big sponsor in Neopia, they have their own shop set up. You will find that many pets will come here straight from school to enjoy all the goodies. While you are here, why not play some Disney games in the lobby or go inside the theatre to watch previews of new Disney releases. And of course, if you are going to the movies, don't forget to stop by the Refreshment Stand.

As you can see, this young Chia would love to sell you some nice muchies for the movie, but please snack responsibly...trash containers are located by the doors for your convenience.

Back To School Shop
Neopets has mentioned creating a school for your pets (other than the training schools to raise your battledome stats.) As of yet, they haven't said anything else about it, but they are selling schools supplies at this little shop. This well educated Techo wants your pet to have the perfect supplies for going to school. He knows that straight A's are nice, but being able to show off your own Aisha Pencil Sharpener to that Scorchio down the hall who topped you with a Quiggle Backpack last week is MUCH more important.

Auction House
Like all auction houses, sometimes you can get really great deals here. This is a great place to sell your items before you have enough np saved up to open your own shop, or when you just want to move your items quickly without discounting them too much. Be sure you want to sell it before you put it up for auction, because you cannot bid on your own lots. This is to keep some of the less than honest Neopians from driving up the prices of their lots.
The auctioneer has a genie tucked away who helps him keep track of all the items. Be sure to check with him so you know what's available. Simply type in the item you are looking for and he'll show you what is currently available, what the current price is, and how much longer bids will be accepted on that lot.
You can also limit who can bid on your lots to just your neofriends. Once you set that, only someone on your list can bid on them...but I'm not really sure why that's a desireable thing...

Food Shop
The main food shop caters to a wide variety of tastes. While it doesn't have any specialty food, it does have rare foods like crystal tacos mixed in with the everyday apples or milk. Supply is limited, so be ready to move fast when this shop restocks. It restocks roughly 8 times each hour. If you are incredibly fortunate, you can even pick up Gourmet Food once in a while...

Book Shop
Ahhhhhhhh...one of my favorite shops. Reading to your pet is one way to increase the intelligence stat. You can also increase it by playing some of the games. Sadly, because so many people were simply discarding books after reading them, books became single use items. That means that they are also much more expensive. Here are some of the ones that JC has read. For the full list, drop by my Books page.

Magic Shop
Kauvara is a very important individual in Neopia. She sells the powerful items like Morphing Potions, Healing Potions, and Faeries that most Neopians crave. Her shop sells out with incredible speed. These items, if you are lucky enough to get them, can either be sold for high profits or be used to greatly benefit your pets...especially Faeries.
Let's talk about these faeries for a little bit. There is
an individual named Balthazar who captures faeries. If you buy/find one
and release it, one of your pets may be blessed with an ability.

Abilities can only be used in the battledome, so unless you just want to build up you pet or you plan on doing a lot of fighting, selling them is often the best course. For more information on abilities, drop by my Abilities page...but don't forget to hit the "back" button to return to the tour.

PetPet Shop
A petpet (or "pet for your pet") is a great way to keep your pet entertained. Pets with pets of their own do not need toys or need to be played with to stay happy. Of course, those of use who spoil our pets do so anyway. Not all pets like all petpet types. Be prepared for your pet to reject certain ones. After all, not everyone likes cats, dogs or snakes. This is the first shop in Neopia that offered pets a pet of their own. JC has an Abominable Snowball, which is a Spooky PetPet.
PetPets can also help your pet in the battledome. Your pet's attack power will be multiplied by whatever the petpet's level is. Of course, this feature doesn't work on the single player battledome...you're on your own their.

Hospital/Pharmacy
Sad as it seems, sometimes your pet may get sick. Curing your pet is an important part of caring for any pet, both real and virtual. The hospital will help you determine what disease your pet has and what medicine it will need to make it feel better. Once you know what you need, stop by the pharmacy to buy the cure.

Wishing Well
The Wishing Well is a special place where countless Neopians come every day, hoping to receive a special item that would ordinarily be beyond their means. Placing their dreams on a handful of NPs and a solemn whisper, most return home with empty pockets and grumbling bellies. However, for a lucky few, The Wishing Well is the answer to their pleas and the deliverer of dreams come true.
Here, you are able to make a small donation to the well and make a wish for an item that you would like to possess. These donations are then placed on the Money Tree or given to the Soup Faerie. Neopets has said "Be sure to type in the object name such as "paintbrush" or "Negg" or "bike." The magic well isn't very clever and will sometimes get confused as to what you want! Also, don't expect a fast response...the well sleeps for 18 hours a day."
It is important to note that the well only grants a handfull of wishes from the thousands submitted each day. Do not donate more than you are prepared to lose, because there is no guarantee you will get anything.

Put a Nerkmid in the machine, and it will dispense rare and exotic foods for your pet. Press the buttons and push the levers for a chance to get a rarer treat. The better the Nerkmid, the better your prize!
Nerkmids are star shaped items that are either found randomly on the site or bought from other users. They are single use items, so be sure you really want to use them before putting them in the machine. Personally, I find them much too valuable to waste on the machine when I so seldom win anything worthwhile. I sell the ones I find.

Health Food Shop
This happy quiggle wants all Neopets to have healthy alternatives to the chocolates, hotdogs, and other junk foods sold elsewhere in Neopia. In fact, Quinton the Quiggle grows most of the wonderful fruits and vegetables that he sells in his own garden. If your pet has more unusual tastes than apples or carrots, Quinton is more than happy to supply a few exotic health foods and has been known to travel to other lands in search of the rarest health foods in Neopia.

In addition to raw fruits and vegetables, Quinton is also a rather good chef and has created some delicious healthy treats. Some of his specialties do take a bit of getting used to, however. After all, organic bananas are one thing, but a Cabbage Doughnut is truly an acquired taste.

Hubert's Hotdogs
Hubert the Mynci is a very interesting character. Seems he sells more than hotdogs and other foods. He played a key role in the mystery about Coltzan's crown and...but that's another story. Sorry for letting my mind wander.

Anyway, this little stand is often stocked with hot dogs, baked potatoes, and all sorts of other goodies. Even the pickiest of pets will find something they like here. Vegetarian pet? No problem...the baked potatoes are excellent, and there are several veggie dogs, too...like the Tigersquash Corn Dog.

Chocolate Factory
The chocolate factory is the perfect place for anyone with a sweet tooth. Here you will find goodies such as the Chocolate Coated Lolly, Apple Sweetie, and Kyrii Cracker. Many of these confections have a very high resale value, too. So, if you can keep yourself from eating your profits, this may be a good group of items to sell in your shop.

In addition to the sweet treats, the owner has a sweet temperment and hosts one of Neopias largest events each year: the Annual Chocolate Ball, where all the workers of the Neopian Chocolate Factory gathered to celebrate a year of successful trade, great new ideas, (and Neopoints in the Bank). It is usually a fancy dress/costume ball, with themed entertainment and decorations and often some of the new items they plan to market next year. After all, if the workers don't like them, most other Neopians won't like them either.

Pizzaroo
Ahhhhh...fresh pizza. This blumaroo makes just about any combination you can imagine. From a fairly safe Pepperoni and Mushroom or Blue Juppie to the more creative and unusual Grape, Mud, and yes...Frog leg varieties. Just how brave are you and your pet?
Yes...there really is a frog leg pizza...

Of course, there are many other varieties to choose from. Here are a few of the more popular:

Uni's Clothing
Even though this fashionable shopkeeper is sporting some of her fine wares, neopets cannot wear any of the items sold here. These items are used strictly for quests. We'll cover quests a little bit later. Aside from being "cute" they serve no real purpose.

Toy Shop
This is a very important shop for pampering your pet. Buy a Red Elephante Doll or Rollerblades or any one of the many toy options for your pet to play with. This will help keep your pet's mood (one of the stats) happy or even delighted.

Some toys will eventually wear out and break. Obviously, no pet wants to play with a broken toy, but some owners will save them for display. Here are a few broken toys you might find around Neopia:

Usukiland!
Have you seen the Usukiland
Advert?
Usuki's are the "barbie dolls" of Neopets. Lots of people collect the "dolls" and the accessories. Here are a few examples:

Gifts Galore
This is a fun little shop, but the items in it are useless. Here you can find all sorts of neat items like Learn-to-paint Sets, Faerie Snow Globes, and Neo Baseball Caps, or seemingly useful items such as Giftboxes and Wrapping Supplies. Unfortuanetly, there is no way to use them once you buy them. Most people buy them as gifts for other users.

Collectible Card Shop
In the begining, these cards were going to be used in a game that Neopets was creating. They later changed their minds. Since then, they have become collectors pieces for those interested in certain aspects of Neopia. For example, if you really like the game, NeoQuest, you would want to collect all the cards relating to it and display them in your NeoDeck. Your NeoDeck is the showcase Neopets has specifically set aside for these cards.
The cards are all shown from the back, so they pretty much look alike. Once you put them in the NeoDeck or look them up on the spoiler list, you can actually "see" the front. Here are a few cards as seen in a NeoDeck:
