Sometimes it's hard to keep up with the news on a day to day basis. Here are the highlights from the Neopets news page for this month...

It seems two brave Neopets have discovered a strange portal in Faerie City (Fyora's Chambers to be exact)! Stepping into this portal transports Neopians to a wonderous new world called Altador. The Altadorians are quite friendly, if a little confused by their new visitors. We'll keep you updated as this mystery unravels. (March 1, 2006)

Once again, they ‘cancelled’ the news for March 3: March 3rd has been CANCELLED due to lack of interest... again. Your regularly scheduled news will resume tomorrow when we're sure interest will return. Until then, Happy March 3rd! (March 3, 2006)

Gadgadsbogen! The trees on Mystery Island are sprouting brand new fruit and the celebrations are just beginning!

Happy Gadgadsbogen Day!

Gadgadsbogen is the Mystery Island festival of fruit. It happens once each year, and the islanders celebrate with a great big tiki-style party to celebrate all the new tasty, exotic fruits that magically appear from the ground! If you aren’t familiar with this happy festival, you may read more about it here. (March 7, 2006)

Your friends may like one of these three new Gadgadsbogen Greetings to celebrate this momentous event. (March 7, 2006)

If you're missing someone special, why not send them one of these new Greetings? (March 9, 2006)

After visiting Altador and speaking with its inhabitants, they have updated the Neopedia with some new information! (March 18, 2006)

Encourage your Neofriends to visit Altador by sending them one of these new Greetings today. (March 23, 2006)

New Band! - The Tyrannian Concert Hall would like to introduce Jub Zambra and the Cobrall Charmers! All the way from the Lost Desert, these guys (and gal) put on a show like no one else! Head over to the Ticket Booth if you'd like to catch a show. (March 24, 2006)

The Hall of Heroes has officially opened its doors to the public! If you're planning a trip to Altador, don't forget to visit this spectacular landmark while you're there. (Oh, and don't mind the lack of light inside the hall. We're sure the Janitor will have that fixed shortly.)

And if you haven't already, be sure to visit the Altadorian Archives as well. It contains quite a large number of interesting books, so there's likely to be at least one you'll find... intriguing. (
March 28, 2006)

Send one of these new Altadorian Greetings to your Neofriends and we're sure they'll think you much cooler for it. (March 30, 2006)

Special Days for these months were:

  • March - Gadgadsbogen - The Mystery Island festival of fruit!
  • Mar 1st – Discovery of Altador

The Last Smiley Guide

Navigation
Level 1 | Level 2 | Level 3 | Level 4 | Level 5 | Level 6 | Level 7 | Level 8 | Codes | Fun Stuff | Link Back

Level 1

Do you really need a guide for this level? Just go around collecting smilies. The only advice I have is not to jump or hit a bump at mach 4.

Level 2

Before you do anything, get all the smilies on the side you are on. Go to a gap and try to jump across and get a smiley in the air. If you miss, jump back and forth until you get the smiley. On the other side, get all the smilies, then get the other smiley in the air. Now just get to the finish.

Level 3

Here's advice: Do NOT jump at the edges while going fast. Get any smilies you see if you're on the platform. Jump from platform to platform in this order: Start on the left platform, jump left, jump left, jump right, jump left, turn around, jump left, turn around, jump left, jump left, jump left, turn around, jump left, turn around, jump right, turn around, jump right, jump left, jump right, jump right, turn around, jump left, turn around, jump left, jump right, jump left, then go to the finish.

Level 4

You'll start this level on a hill. Go straight down, without turning, as fast as possible, and you SHOULD ramp over the gap. Now, there's one smiley to the left and one in front of you, behind a speed pad. Get the one to the left. There are two ways here. You can creep to the speed pad slowly, or squeeze between the speed pad and the ramp to get the smiley, then zip on the slanted wall on the left. On the next platform, there's a smiley in the middle. Jump to get it. There's another speed pad and slanted wall. Do what you did last time. On the final (Or is it?) platform, get the final smiley in the top left corner.

Secret

You may have noticed the speed pad in front of the angel smiley. Ram at that as fast as you can, and you should fly over the wall. You'll land on another platform. to the right, there's a wooden ramp sloping up. Go underneath it to get a catfish smiley. NOW you can go to the finish.

Level 5

Before you go anywhere, turn around to see a smiley hiding behind you. Get it. Now, go on the thin path. Right after you start going, there's a fork. Go straight. Keep following the path, turning if needed. The path will bring you to a platform. There's another path leading you to another platform. Keep going until you get to the platform with a smiley. Get it, then follow the path. Move past the finish, then across the bridge to the smiley. Follow the other path to get to the angel smiley.

Secret

Where the angel smiley is, you can keep going up. When you get all the way up, jump to the platform. There's an invisible smiley *points to picture above* about where smiley is.
or
'On level 5, after you turn around and get the first smiley, go to the fork in the road and instead of taking the straight way take the right one which leads to the dead end. The moving elevator will come directly to you and take you to the secret platform. You can take the secret smiley and get back on the elevator immediately. Then the elevator will take you back to the same place you caught it but instead of jumping there wait till the elevator moves and stops in mid-air and then heads back to the place you started the level. It takes longer but it's a much easier way to get the smiley.' -As said by stilllearning

Level 6

Keep going up the ramp, collecting any smilies you see, until you get to the top. Note: Don't go too fast, or you'll fly off the ledge. When you get to the top, there'll be a bridge. If you get on it, it will lean down on the place you are at, making it imposible to get up. Push one of the boxes nearby onto it. Now, jump up to the ledge at the end of the bridge. Follow the narrow path until you come to the first fork. Go left to get the smiley. Go back to the main path, then get to the other fork and go right. Go around the square to get the last two smilies.

Secret

Where there was the sad smiley, there was also a path sloping down. Go down there. You'll see a red button; jump on it. It will bounce you up to the catfish smiley. The thing that makes this tricky is getting down and back. The path is steep and crooked. All I can say is be careful.
or
'Get all the smileys in that level and head to the exit. Instead of going to the exit go to the left of the exit and you will see the secret smiley platform directly below. Now you can either jump directly on it or as I prefer aim for jumping to the left back corner of the platform (Jump on that corner wall). Then switch to character view mode and manuever to the front of the platform. Go back to normal mode and go up to the first valley in the pathway you normally use to get down there. Turn around and run and jump to get the smiley. That way you will get the smiley without losing a life and you can use the end level code to end the level.' -As said by stilllearning

Level 7

As soon as you start, go to the right and get the smiley on top of the dune. Now, turn around and go to the teleporter on the stone. Jump up and go in it, then get the smiley on the platform it teleports you to. Go back in it, then get the smilet up against a wall nearby. Go around the large pyramid to the small cut-off one. Jump on it, get the smiley, then jump to the smiley on the shrine. (This may take a few tries.) Now you can get the secret, or jump (yes, jump) onto the finish.

Secret

Up against the huge pyramid were a couple speed pads. Hit them at full force to be launched up to the secret smiley.

Level 8

As soon as you start, there'll be stone platforms in front of you. Keep in mind that you'll slip if you hold backwards. Jump to the first platform, then second (get the smiley), then third. Jump to the pyramid in front of you, not the left platform. Jump to get the smiley in the corner, then to the stone pathway. Keep following it to the smiley, get it, then onto the crack between the two slabs. DON'T press any button, it'll go down and jump by itself. Jump over the bump, and get the last smiley.

Secret
I'm not telling. ;)

Give a man a fish…When is helping not helpful?

Long ago (when I was a little girl), I came across a poem by Shel Silverstein that ended:

And some kind of help is the kind of help

            That helping's all about

And some kind of help is the kind of help

            We all can do without

It describes a situation where one person was always helpful and another person, well…was not. On Neopets, this can take on all sorts of problematic or troublesome dimensions. Here are a few examples that I’ve come across. Glance at them and decide if they are helping or hurting:

  1. I’m working on the new Altador plot and I can’t find my constellation anywhere. I’ve posted my star chart on my pet’s page. Can someone help me? Helping or Hurting
  2. I really want the new game avatar, but I really stink at this…can someone get it for me? Helping or Hurting
  3. I’m feeling generous and will help the first 5 players find their Dreamer constellation for the new Altador plot. Helping or Hurting
  4. I love the game for this new avatar and I’m really good at it. Want me to get it for you? Helping or Hurting
  5. I need to be gone for a few days. Could you sit my account and pick up my dailies for me? I’ll pay you well. Helping or Hurting
  6. I just got a Dark Faerie quest. Can someone look up “Yo-Yo” on the Shop Wizard for me? Helping or Hurting
  7. I’ve got some extra time on my hands, want me to pick up your dailies for you? Helping or Hurting
  8. I’ve found/created a really good guide for the game the new avatar is based on. Would you like to see it? Helping or Hurting
  9. I’ve been trying to find my constellation for HOURS! Can someone find it for me? Helping or Hurting
  10. I’ve been scammed! Can you give me a few items to help get me back on my feet? Helping or Hurting
  11. Ok…I’m totally lost with the newest _________ Can someone help me out here? Helping or Hurting
  12. Great…the Air Faerie just asked for “Conditioner”. Can anyone give me some? Helping or Hurting

How do you think you did? Let’s discuss:

  1. I’m working on the new Altador plot and I can’t find my constellation anywhere. I’ve posted my star chart on my pet’s page. Can someone help me? Helping If you are feeling generous and have some time to kill, there’s no reason not to give them a hint or two…like the starting point of their constellation, where they can see a screen shot, etc. DO NOT go into their accounts to do it for them.
  2. I really want the new game avatar, but I really stink at this…can someone get it for me? Hurting There is a world of difference between offering game tips and actually going into another player’s account. Any time you go on to another player’s account, you are breaking the Terms and Conditions you agreed to when you signed up (For easy explanation, see Terms and Conditions – FAQ). Even if that were not the case, you should avoid doing so for one very simple reason: Not everyone is as nice as you. If you go into an account that belongs to another player, they can accuse you of scamming/hacking and you may lose your accounts.
  3. I’m feeling generous and will help the first 5 players find their Dreamer constellation for the new Altador plot. Helping If someone is feeling generous and wants to help, there’s no reason for them not to give a hint or two…like the starting point of the constellation, where they can see a screen shot, etc. DO NOT let them go into your accounts to do it for you.
  4. I love the game for this new avatar and I’m really good at it. Want me to get it for you? Hurting Never, ever let someone else use your account. At best, you are cheating. At worst, it could be a scammer who will ruin your account. Any time you allow someone access to your account, you are breaking the Terms and Conditions you agreed to when you signed up (For easy explanation, see Terms and Conditions – FAQ).
  5. I need to be gone for a few days. Could you sit my account and pick up my dailies for me? I’ll pay you well. Hurting Any time you go on to another player’s account, you are breaking the Terms and Conditions you agreed to when you signed up (For easy explanation, see Terms and Conditions – FAQ). You are allowed one account for dailies and if you go onto another account to do it for someone else, even if they don’t accuse you of trying to scam/hack that account, you could still be frozen for abusing the rule about doing dailies on more than one account. Refer the player to the NeoLodge. You can read more about this in the November 2005 article: NeoHolidays mean NeoLodge Stays!
Protecting your pets while you are gone for the holidays.
In addition, you are not allowed to ask for a fee for helping. That falls under the first section of the Terms and Conditions.
  6. I just got a Dark Faerie quest. Can someone look up “Yo-Yo” on the Shop Wizard for me? Helping By all means, look the item up for them. It’s frustrating to be locked out of the best item research tool (the Shop Wizard). If you don’t have time yourself, refer them to the special chat board that Neopets has created: Quests
  7. I’ve got some extra time on my hands, want me to pick up your dailies for you? Hurting Any time you allow another player to go on to your account, you are breaking the Terms and Conditions you agreed to when you signed up (For easy explanation, see Terms and Conditions – FAQ). At best, you are cheating. At worst, it could be a scammer who will ruin your account. If you are planning to be away for a few days, use the NeoLodge. You can read more about this in the November 2005 article: NeoHolidays mean NeoLodge Stays!
Protecting your pets while you are gone for the holidays.
  8. I’ve found/created a really good guide for the game the new avatar is based on. Would you like to see it? Helping Guides are great. Most help sites have them, many players use them. In fact, you’ve already passed one in this newsletter. As long as the player isn’t trying to charge for the information and has it posted on a safe site (most use their pet pages), then I say kudos to them.
  9. I’ve been trying to find my constellation for HOURS! Can someone find it for me? Hurting Any time you go on to another player’s account, you are breaking the Terms and Conditions you agreed to when you signed up (For easy explanation, see Terms and Conditions – FAQ). If you are feeling generous and have some time to kill, there’s no reason not to give them a hint or two…like where they can see a screen shot of a finished constellation.
  10. I’ve been scammed! Can you give me a few items to help get me back on my feet? Hurting I know this seems harsh, but you’re not helping when you give someone items to help them ‘get back on their feet’. What they need more than items is information so they can learn how not to let it happen again. In fact, many times they have been scammed as a result of trying to cheat the system with get rich quick scams. I realize this is not always the case, and do have genuine sympathy for those players. If you are already their neofriend and want to help real victims out, by all means go ahead, but for the random posts on the chat boards, the best thing you can do is refer them to the information on how to keep their accounts safe and wish them better luck in the future. You can find this information on the Neopets Safety Tips page, their Terms and Conditions – FAQ page, and in the October 2005 article: Common Sense is not that common: Keeping your computer, account and yourself safe.
  11. Ok…I’m totally lost with the newest _________ Can someone help me out here? Helping If you are feeling generous and have some time to kill, there’s no reason not to give them a hint or two…or even talk them through the whole process of whatever they are confused about. In fact, why not refer them to a particularly helpful game of plot guide or create your own? DO NOT go into their accounts to do it for them.
  12. Great…the Air Faerie just asked for “Conditioner”. Can anyone give me some? Hurting If this is just a random post on a board, they really are simply asking for free items (also known as ‘begging’). By all means, look the item up for them, but unless you are their neofriend, there is no reason that they should even consider asking you for a free item…and if they are a neofriend, you may want to examine that to be sure they aren’t just in it for the items. If you don’t have time to look it up yourself, refer them to the special chat board that Neopets has created: Quests

How did you do? Did any of them surprise you? Often it boils down to item vs. information. Many of us are familiar with the old saying:

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day.

Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

In short, any time you ask or are asked to go onto another players account, don’t do it. You are setting yourself up for problems. Also, don’t let your generosity get the better of you. If all they want is information, by all means help them out. Don’t forget, however, that charging for information is a scam and can get you frozen. If you’re not doing it out of the goodness of your heart, best stay away from helping.

As always, play safe and have fun!

For those of you who are interested, here is the full poem mentioned at the beginning of the featured article:

Helping

By Shel Silverstein

Agatha Fry, she made a pie

And Christopher John helped bake it

Christopher John, he mowed the lawn

And Agatha Fry helped rake it

Now, Zachary Zugg took out the rug

And Jennifer Joy helped shake it

Then Jennifer Joy, she made a toy

And Zachary Zugg helped break it

And some kind of help is the kind of help

That helping's all about

And some kind of help is the kind of help

We all can do without
