Chat Room Etiquette: How to get what you want/need
without getting yelled at.
Ever posted a message in one of the chat rooms and found
you getting flamed? Ever wanted to flame someone for "doing something
stupid" on the chat? If you can answer no to both of those, you either
spend almost no time on the chats or are incredibly lucky. As with so many
things in life, there are certain "rules" that you are expected
to follow, but everyone expects you to know them before you get started. These
rules are referred to as "etiquette" or "manners". Following
these rules can help stop the flames and make your overall chatting experience
more pleasant.
Before you post anything, you should first decide which chat
would be the best one for what you want to say. Neopets has divided them for
a reason, and spamming (posting on the wrong board or posting the same thing
over and over and over and...) will only cause you problems later. In fact,
persistent spammers can be frozen according to the TOS. If you need help or have questions, drop by
the Help Chat
or the Newbie Chat.
You can also do some general chatting here as long as you don't try to take
over the boards. If you have items you are trying to get rid of, drop a note
on the Trading/Auctions
or the Shop Ads
boards. If you want to promote your guild, post an ad for it on the Guild Chat.
If you have entered your pet in the Beauty Contest, please post on the Beauty Contest Chat.
Specialized chats, such as Battledome,
Role Play,
and Neoquest,
should only be used for their specific purposes. Once you have decided what
board to post in, think carefully about what you want to say. Being rude,
annoying, or spamming is only going to cause others to ignore or flame you.
Again, you risk being reported and frozen, too.
Listed below are TNE's Ten Commandments for Chatting:
Following these tips should help you avoid some of the more unpleasant problems associated with the chat rooms. Unfortunately, you will notice that many people still can't seem to grasp these basics. However, as in life, there are always those who make everyone in your "group" look bad because they will not do what is expected of them.
