TNE News

For the most part, there hasn't been much to update on TNE this month. With that in mind, I'm working on some new pages that may be added soon. The Tour is slowly progressing, but the arrival of the new world and the reworking of some of the maps has caused a bit of a slow down for it.

Starting next month, TNE Report Card will have a "Featured Game" in each issue. If you have a favorite game on Neopets and would like to write a strategy guide and review for it, send it to:Naomi_Tran@baylor.edu and be sure to include your username so you can get credit for your hard work.

Also in the work is a new "Neopets Merchandise" page. With so many of you writing that there is not a Limited Too or a Claire's near you, TNE will be stocking some of the merchandise for you to view and purchase.

Last, we are hoping to have our own domain name set up by this time next month. The portal page design is almost finished and most of the work for the new layout has been started.

Chat Room Etiquette: How to get what you want/need without getting yelled at.

Ever posted a message in one of the chat rooms and found you getting flamed? Ever wanted to flame someone for "doing something stupid" on the chat? If you can answer no to both of those, you either spend almost no time on the chats or are incredibly lucky. As with so many things in life, there are certain "rules" that you are expected to follow, but everyone expects you to know them before you get started. These rules are referred to as "etiquette" or "manners". Following these rules can help stop the flames and make your overall chatting experience more pleasant.

Before you post anything, you should first decide which chat would be the best one for what you want to say. Neopets has divided them for a reason, and spamming (posting on the wrong board or posting the same thing over and over and over and...) will only cause you problems later. In fact, persistent spammers can be frozen according to the TOS. If you need help or have questions, drop by the Help Chat or the Newbie Chat. You can also do some general chatting here as long as you don't try to take over the boards. If you have items you are trying to get rid of, drop a note on the Trading/Auctions or the Shop Ads boards. If you want to promote your guild, post an ad for it on the Guild Chat. If you have entered your pet in the Beauty Contest, please post on the Beauty Contest Chat. Specialized chats, such as Battledome, Role Play, and Neoquest, should only be used for their specific purposes. Once you have decided what board to post in, think carefully about what you want to say. Being rude, annoying, or spamming is only going to cause others to ignore or flame you. Again, you risk being reported and frozen, too.

Listed below are TNE's Ten Commandments for Chatting:

  1. Thou shalt post on the appropriate board. (Do not advertise your guild, shop, or Beauty Contest entry on the general or help boards.)
  1. Thou shalt not post the same thing over and over again, even if it is on the right board. (i.e., don't flood the BC Chat with an advertisement for your pet.) This leads to people flaming you because they are tired of seeing it...and since it violates the TOS, you may be frozen.
  1. Thou shalt not ask a question and then say “neomail me”. If it’s not important enough for you to spend a minute waiting for an answer, it is not important enough to ask others to spend their time looking up the answer.
  1. Thou shalt not create boards with misleading titles. For example, don't post a board begging for people to vote for your BC entry or buy from your shop and give it a bold title saying: Please! I need your HELP!!!! People will click there thinking you need someone to look something up or have a question answered; only to find out you lied to them. When this happens, they tend to get "cranky" and you'll get all sorts of negative posts on your board. Also, they will ignore your posts later...when you may really need help.
  1. Thou shalt not beg. EVER. As in life, nobody "owes" you something just because you want it and/or they have been there longer than you. Asking for help is one thing (since it's free), but asking someone (often users you've never even chatted with before) to spend np on things that they will not benefit from is wrong. I’m not saying that asking to trade for items is wrong…I’m referring to certain users who show up on the chats demanding or pleading that someone send them a Hidden Tower item just because they want it.
  1. Thou shalt post the answers to questions you know, or post one of the help/fan sites where the user might find the answer. Remember that all legitimate information is available for free somewhere. Charging for information is simply dishonest and may get your account frozen.
  1. Thou shalt not simply post "SCAM" on a board. It is important to put why it is a scam so that other users can recognize that scam in the future. If several others have already posted a warning, move on to the next. There is no reason for 20 people to post on that board.
  1. Thou shalt investigate "scams" before posting a warning or reporting a user. Never report someone just because another user accuses him/her of scamming the first user. Too often, these posts are simply created when one user is mad at another user and wants to get his/her account frozen. Of course, if you can observe the scam (i.e. they tell you the user has a scam in the shop and you can look it up) then be sure to report the scam to abuse@neopets.com, the autoform at http://www.neopets.com/autoform.phtml, or if it is in a shop, you can simply click the "Report shop" link.
  1. Thou shalt not try to make people feel bad for not voting for your pet, buying from your shop, or joining your guild. Most of us know where to find the BC entries, the cheapest shops, and the list for guilds. If we were the slightest bit interested in them, we would go there on our own. Trying to make others feel guilty will only annoy the ones you are trying to attract.
  1. Thou shalt follow the Chat Rules posted by Neopets. Remember that you agreed to follow all parts of the TOS when you signed up. In fact, you should probably re-read the TOS every once in a while to refresh your memory. Why not do so now?

Following these tips should help you avoid some of the more unpleasant problems associated with the chat rooms. Unfortunately, you will notice that many people still can't seem to grasp these basics. However, as in life, there are always those who make everyone in your "group" look bad because they will not do what is expected of them.

TNE Teacher’s Pet Award

This month's site spotlight goes to cbosdell's "InformationALOT". One of the most interesting thing about this site is that it is a multi-themed site that does each theme very well. It takes rare talent to combine such different themes. Be sure to drop by and visit the Neopets Help Section...it's worth the trip.
