Sometimes it's hard to keep up with the news on a day to day basis. Here are the highlight from the Neopets news page for this month...

If you missed the fun for April Fools Day this year, click here to visit my archive.

New Feature! - They've now (hopefully) made it much easier to select a shopkeeper for your shop! Shopkeepers are organized by species and color, and you can search the list for Petpets, activities, or anything you can think of. They'll be tweaking it and making sure everything is nifty before they move it over to galleries. (April 12, 2006)

A new Neopedia gives us a bit of info on one of Neopia's greatest crime fighters, Judge Hog. (April 12, 2006)

Judge Hog finally takes his place in the Gallery of Heroes amongst the others who fight for justice in Neopia. (April 12, 2006)

Let your friends in on your secret identity by sending them one of the new Defenders Greetings. (April 12, 2006)

Send your friends one of these new Greetings if you're feeling a bit gloomy today. (April 14, 2006)

Those of you intersted in learning more about the elusive leader of the thieves guild should take a look at the latest Neopedia article all about Kanrik. (April 21, 2006)

Jerdana is the latest Neopet to get her own How to Draw page! She's wise, powerful, and obviously has a really good tailor. (April 26, 2006)

New Feature! – Neopets’ code-checking filters have been given an upgrade! Just as before, when you submit code to Neopets (in your user lookup, shop, Petpage, etc.) it will be checked. However, with the new system, the filter will now let you know what parts are invalid! This means your code must be properly formatted for it to work. Standards coders will be happy to hear this. Rest assured, this does not mean your customization options have been limited! They're working hard to make sure you can continue to be creative in all areas where code is allowed. This just means that certain code that is invalid will no longer be let passed the filter, and you'll have to validate your code if you want it to work on Neopets. There are lots more to explain, but not enough room on New Features to do it.  If you'd like more information, click here to view the FAQ! (April 26, 2006)

If you'd like to know more about Jeran, this new Neopedia article may help you out. (April 28, 2006)

Games on Neopets are in a constant state of change and these changes are often not listed in the news. Here are the changes for this month:

Here are the new games that were added this month:

a    New Game! - In Sophie's Stew, you must help the distracted swamp witch brew one of her powerful potions without making a mess of things! It's not quite as easy as it sounds. (April 6, 2006)

a    Match the correct names to the descriptions about Holly Hobbie and her friends and win Neopoints in this latest sponsor game - Holly Hobbie: Matching Madness. (April 7, 2006)

a    A popular sponsor game returns! Keep the ball off the ground (it's not easy!) and win Neopoints in VERB YELLOWBALL. (April 13, 2006)

a    Don't miss an opportunity to play with your food. Try out the latest sponsor game - A Pop-tarts? Great Fruit Escape. (April 14, 2006)

These games were taken off the site this month:

Ø       Will be updated next month. Again, my apologies for lack of updates...

Changes to existing games:

After venturing to the Haunted Woods to talk it over with Sophie, we've increased the NP ratio for Sophie's Stew by 100%! (April 7, 2006)

Defenders of Neopia: Series 2 - A new villain threatens Neopia, and a new series of DoN missions begins! Judge Hog takes on Mr. Chuckles, and you're the only one that can help... if you can find his secret villain hideout, that is. To get him as a challenger, refresh the Coconut Shy game page...it took a lot of refreshes for me...

This means that Series 1 is over! (Congrats if you've defeated all 17 challengers!) While no new challengers will be added, the series is still open for anyone who wants to begin/continue those missions. You can also do missions from both series simultaneously if you wish! The Defenders never turn away a helping hand. (
April 12, 2006)

A much needed update has been made to the images used for your Neopet abilities! You can see all of them here. (April 29, 2006)

If you know of anything that was overlooked, or have suggestions or even constructive criticisms, use this form.

Web of Vernax - A Guide to Spinning

OK, so you're an arachnophile? That means you like to file racks, yes? What? Scroll Racks? Toast racks? Ah, no, it means you like Spyders. Well then, my friend, you'll feel right at home in Web of Vernax. Walk with me a while and I will see if I can explain the game to you.

In this game you are a Spyder, and a very handsome one, I might add. Your aim is to survive! To do this you must catch the bugs (Vernax) that scurry around so that you may feast on them later. Web spinning is simple for we Spyders. Just point to where you want to start the web, click and hold down the left mouse button and move the mouse in the direction you want the web to go. Once you see an arrow pointing in the right direction simply release the button and away it goes. You will need to trap the Vernax within a square or rectangle of webs, however the corners of your webs don't all have to meet. You can run a longer web in one direction and then cut across the middle of it to make the trap (see figure 1 below). For the purposes of the guide, I will call a single strand a web, and the four-sided web a trap.

Whilst you are constructing your traps be very careful not to let any Vernax touch a web as it is being spun or you will lose a life. You can also lose a life if the timer runs out, so keep an eye on the beautifully decorated grandfather clock on the right of your screen. On the subject of lives, you can get an extra life by running webs through the little Spyder Bites that appear randomly on the screen. A Spyder Bite is a little fellow with big red glowing eyes – you can't miss him. Be sure to get him quickly though, he doesn't stay around for very long. You need ten of the little fellows to gain one extra life.

To get maximum points your traps should be as small as possible. However there's no point in trying for a teeny trap if you lose a life in the process. You will just have to find a happy medium between getting a big score for your capture and making sure you don't lose a life. As the Vernax get faster your traps will have to be bigger so the little darlings don't run into the web as you are spinning it, thereby costing you a life.

You can get a bonus score if you only use 1, 2, 3 or 4 webs to trap all of the Vernax on any 1 level. This is usually only possible when you have just 1 or 2 Vernax to catch. Use the corners of the screen to catch them, preferable using only 2 webs per Vernax (as in the Figure 1 above). To only use 1 web you will need to start your web just before the Vernax moves into the trap area, so it has time to run across (or down) the whole width (or length) of the screen. This one is quite tricky, but you get 75 bonus points for it so you may want to try it. At least, if you miss, you can always restart the game.

You can also get a bonus when you catch more than 1 Vernax in the same trap – so if you see 2 or 3 heading in the same direction, get spinning! You will even get a little tune if you catch 4 or more in one trap. Score-wise it is better to catch multiple Vernax in slightly bigger traps than just individually in smaller traps, although, of course, catching multiples in a small trap is really good!

In Level 6 you will be introduced to the evil red Spyder. He's a nasty creature who removes your webs, usually just as you are about to trap a Vernax, of course. The only way to be rid of him is if, when he is removing your beautifully spun and strategically placed web, he ends up away from the edges so he has no webs to travel along. You can set up some traps for him by spinning a few webs that go nowhere and hoping he will choose one of these webs to remove. As you move up in levels you will encounter more and more red Spyders. It is also a good tactic for trapping Vernax too. Have four or five webs parallel to each other about and evenly spread along one side of the screen. Then as Vernax enter an area you simply have to run the final web between two of them, making the trap as small as possible. By the way, the Vernax will bounce off any webs you have spun (including the ends), but I am sure you have noticed that already. In figure 3, below, the red Spyder came down and removed the left vertical web and I was able to finish the level without his interference.

At level 8 you go back to having just 1Vernax to trap, but he is moving considerably faster. Now you will find that your traps have to be bigger so you don't lose a life. One big downside to playing this game is that there are no breaks. There is no pause button and you don't even get to pause in between levels, the next level just starts automatically. This can be a bit of a pain, especially when you are trying to write a game guide and you time keeps running out! If you are playing for Neopoints only, then you can stop when your score reaches 2500, this will give you the maximum 1000 NP. If you are playing for glory and a very cool looking trophy, then just keep on playing. I myself have only managed a bronze trophy so far, but I will keep trying. I would really like a gold one.

Third place at
Web of Vernax!!

One big downside to playing this game is that there are no breaks. There is no pause button and you don't even get to pause in between levels, the next level just starts automatically. This can be a bit of a pain, especially when you are trying to write a game guide and your time keeps running out!

Sadly, there are no codes or other tricks that I know of to aid you in this game. Please, if you find one, let me know and I will include it in a later edition of this guide, with due credit of course. Good luck, my friend. I hope you find this guide useful. Feel free to drop me a Neomail if you have any comments or extra hints to offer, I would really like that gold trophy!

'Click to activate and use this control'

Look familiar? A lot of players have noticed this and other problems when trying to view Flash images or play the Flash and Shockwave games. In cases of the images, it is simply a matter of clicking on the image and then clicking on the area you wanted to visit (like the Lost Desert Food Shop). For the games, they were slow and awkward at best or non-working or glitchy at worst. If you are one of the players pulling out his or her hair over this, do not despair...help is on the way.

What's happening? One of the latest Windows updates caused a problem with ActiveX controls. This means that Flash, Shockwave, and other similar programs either don't run correctly or don't run at all. Many players were unaware of this, especially those who have set their computers to update automatically.

How do I fix it? At this time, there are only two options. First, you can download the patch that Microsoft has created at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917425 (Always remember that younger players should talk to their parents and get permission before downloading and installing anything to their computers.) When you get to that page, scroll down until you see a section that looks like this:

You will need to select the patch that matches your Internet Explorer type. Once you click on the link you need, you should see a screen that looks like this:

The red arrow on the image is an estimate of how long it will take to download. You may select your speed from the drop-down menu if you choose. The green arrow shows which language the patch will use. If you do not use English for your computer, be sure to select your language from the drop-down menu or it will not work properly. Finally, once you've made any change you need, click the "Download" button shown with the yellow arrow.

Next, you'll have a popup window with two choices (not including 'cancelling', of course...).

+ To start the installation immediately, click Open or Run this program from its current location.
+ To copy the download to your computer for installation at a later time, click Save or Save this program to disk.

I suggest the first option. It should bring up an auto-install feature. Allow it to run and respond to the prompts as necessary.

The installation process can be a bit lengthly, so take your time and be sure to clear your temporary internet files and cookies then restart when you are done.

To clear your cache files:

1. Open up your browser.

2. Click Tools - Internet Options.

3. If you have a "delete cookies" option, click that.

4. Click "Delete Files".

5. Click "delete offline content".

6. Immediately restart your computer.

The problem with this patch is that I'm told the patch will expire in June. Something permanent will have to be implemented later. Your second option is to use another web browser. I've been told that some of the newer specialty browsers like Mozilla are not affected by this problem.

What happens when the patch expires? To be perfectly honest, I don't know. This is the first time I've dealt with a problem of this type. Our best hope is for Microsoft to integrate a solution in their next update...hopefully before the patch expires. If not, things could get very interesting. If not, then it's time to look for other internet options...

As always, play safe and have fun!
