What are Stocks?

A company can choose to offer a percentage of itself to the general public. This means everyone can invest in this company if they want to. When you want to buy a portion of a company you need to buy a share. A share is the name given to that portion of the company. This doesn't mean you own the company, it just means you have invested in it.

What is a Ticker Symbol?

A ticker symbol is a quick way to look up a company. Each company chooses a combination of 2-4 letters that abbreviates their name. This is unique for each company. For example Lupe Consolidated has the ticker symbol LUPE. Powlex Corporation has the ticker symbol POWL.

Here is a small portion of the Ticker Symbol page. Note that the statistics listed here are for example purposes only and do not reflect current market values.

Logo Ticker Company Volume Open Curr Change
AAVL Alien Aisha Vending Ltd. 0 6 7 +16.67%
BB Breadmaster Bakeries 0 9 12 +33.33%
BOTT Balthazars Faerie Bottling Inc. 34830 41 36 -12.20%
CHPS Chiatech Password Security 28841 26 28 +7.69%
DROO Dice-A-Roo Industries PLC. 203105 17 18 +5.88%
HELT Health Frog Groceries 0 6 6 +0.00%
HUW Huberts Hot Dogs 39670 30 28 -6.67%
KAUF Kau-Kau Farm 0 12 11 -8.33%
NATN The National Neopian Bank 0 7 7 +0.00%
NEGG Neggwork Commerce 0 0 0 +0.00%
SMUG The Smugglers Cove 14941 38 37 -2.63%
SSGS Meri Acre Sausages 16379 126 122 -3.17%
TAG The Auction Genie 48617 18 22 +22.22%
TNAH The Neopian Auction House 317757 17 17 +0.00%
TSRC The Shoyru Company 44001 26 31 +19.23%
UNIB Unis Beauty Salon 0 6 6 +0.00%
VPTS Virtupets 0 12 13 +8.33%

Note that under the "Change" column, the black +0.00% represents no price change, while anything listed in green represents a price increase and red represents a price decrease. So, for this example, Alien Aisha Vending Ltd., (AAVL have monopolosed the vending industry in Neopia. After setting up the company early in the month of Swimming ,they have made a huge profit by selling their bizarre alien creations to Neopians. Slogan - When you have no other choice.) has had a modest price increase of 16.67% today (from 6 np per share to 7 np per share), while The National Neopian Bank (National Neopian Bank PLC is one of the largest financial services groups in Neopia. provides a broad range of financial services to its customers worldwide. Its purpose is to serve customers by understanding their needs as individuals and by offering services and products that anticipate and satisfy their requirements. The bank has an unprecedented security record and handles million of neopoint transactions on a daily basis.) has not had a price change at all today, and Balthazars Faerie Bottling Inc. (A very dark and mysterious company indeed. They work underground, popping up when people least expect it and stealing faeries, bottling them, and then selling them on. Why anybody lets these people on the Stock Exchange is beyond most people!) has dropped 12.20% in price (from 41 np per share to 36np per share).

How do I choose which stock to buy?

This is completely up to you. Buy stocks of products that you believe in, or think are a good business idea. It is usually good practice to also buy stocks that are quite low in price, this way they usually will go up and not down. Alternatively some people prefer to invest in stable stocks that have always been high.

Another way that you may go about choosing a stock is by clicking the 'Bargains' link at the top of the page or by doing research by reading about the stocks on the News/Research page. These two pages can direct you to good stocks.

Also, each week there is a break down of the main climbers and losers, plus predictions for the next week's activities in the Neopian Times. This may be a good place to research into your stock and see how it has performed in the past.

When should I buy my stocks?

It is generally better to buy stocks when their prices are quite low, although you should be quite confident that the stock price is not going to fall lower. Try to follow what a stock price has been for a few weeks before buying. If the stock price suddenly dips, that is normally a good time to invest.

When should I sell my stocks?

It is generally better to sell stocks when their prices are high, or they have increased since you bought them. The aim is to make a profit by selling your stocks at a higher price than you bought them for. If a stock suddenly shoots up, it could be the right time to sell.

Why isn't my stock changing?

Stock prices only change when shares are bought or sold. If no one is buying or selling the stock you have bought the price is unlikely to change unless there is a market crash.

Is there a way to find out how competitors of my stock are doing?

If you want to learn more about your company and/or its competitors then you will need to click on the 'Profile' link at the top of the Stock Market page. In order to look up a company, you will need to know it's ticker symbol. This is the 2 to 4 letter symbol that abbreviates the name of your company. Type it in and click the go button and this will take you to a page that will list current competitors to your company, and it will give you a link to find out more about your company.
